Writing Whole Numbers

Place value

place value

Rule of thumb: After you finished the hundreds place value you move to the next name of the place value. Example in thousands, we start with (ones) thousand, then (tens) ten thousands, then (hundreds) hundred thousand. After hundred thousand we do not write thousand thousand, we use a new term that is millions.

Millions Thousands Units
Hundreds tens Ones Hundreds tens Ones Hundreds tens Ones

Numbers to Words

Write 8, 329, 154, 215 in words. It's good to note that digits are group inro three to denote (ones, tens, hundreds).

We start by reading from the rightmost side of the number:
Hundreds Tens Ones
2 1 5 Units
1 5 4 Thousands
3 2 9 Millions
8 Billions
We can reconstruct the number in word as: 8 billion, three hundred twenty nine million, One hundred fifty four thousand, two hundred fifteen.

Having a zero on the number might be confusing, thus for beginners using the table first is highly advisable.

Example write 2, 020, 001 in words

Hundreds Tens Ones
0 0 1 Units
0 2 0 Thousands
2 Millions
We can reconstruct the number in word as: two million, twenty thousand, one.

Words to Numbers

Writing numbers in numeral form is just the opposite of the procedures given above.

How do you write thirty five billion, one hundred eleven million, six hundred twenty thousand, two hundred five in Hindu-Arabic Numerals?.

Hundreds Tens Ones
2 0 5 Units
6 2 0 Thousands
1 1 1 Millions
3 5 Billions
That would be 35, 111, 620, 205

Comparing Whole Numbers

Its very easy to compare whole numbers, here are simple rules to follow.

  1. The higher the number of digits the larger the number.
    1. eg. 112, 125 > 99, 999. Since 112, 125 has 6 digits and 99, 999 has five digits
  2. If the two numbers have the same number of digits, Start the comparison from left to right.
  3. Which is greater between 112, 125 and 109, 999?
    1 1 2 1 2 5
    1 0 9 9 9 9
Since 1 = 1 you cannot decide yet which number is greater. Since 1 > 0, you could say that 112, 125 > 109, 999 No need to compare the remaining digits
